JU expels 2 students for ‘taking drugs’

The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have suspended two students of the university on charge of taking drugs on the campus. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the university’s Disciplinary Board at the residence of Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam on Thursday night, said JU registrar Abu Bakar Siddik. The suspended are Mainuddin Jony, a student of Bangla Department, and Sazzad Hossain Sayem of the Computer Science and Engineering Department. A four-member committee, headed by Prof Rasheda Akter of the Teacher-Student Centre, was formed to enquire into the allegation. It was asked to submit the probe report within next two weeks.Sources said a group of activists of the university unit BCL caught the two students red-handed while they were taking drugs openly inside AFM Kamal Uddin Hall on Thursday night. Later the due was handed over to the university administration.
Drug trader arrested in Narsingdi
NARSINGDI: Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested an alleged drug trader from in front of the main gate of Dream Holiday Park at Choitabo village under Narsingdi sadar upazila on Wednesday night. Police also recovered 25, 630 piece of yaba tablets worth about Taka 77 lakhs from his possession. Arrested person was identified as Sharif, 30, son of Abu Taher of Mukandee Gajipur village under Araihajar Upazila of Narayanganj district. Police Super Amena Begum disclosed this at a press briefing at her office room this noon. She said on information a team of DB police conducted the raid in front of the main gate of Dream Holiday Park and arrest Sharif with 25, 630 pieces of yaba tablets. Other police officials of the district were present in the press conference, reports BSS.
Cosmetics, motor parts worth Tk3 cr seized in Benapole
BENAPOLE: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized a truck along with motor parts and cosmetics worth Tk three crore from Amrakhali area here on Thursday night.
Tipped off, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area around 11.30 pm and recovered Indian motor parts and cosmetics, said Lieutenant Colonel Jahangir Hossain, commanding officer of BGB-26. The seized items were deposited to the Jessore customs house, reports UNB.
2 Asrayan projects in Panchagarh to be completed soon
PANCHAGARH: The implementation of two Asrayan projects located at Hajirhat and Kalupir area under Debiganj upazila in Panchagarh district are nearing completion. The projects are expected to be completed within two weeks. The projects would provide shelter for 60 landless families while each family will get one house, kitchen, latrine and tube-well. The government has allocated Taka one crore 8 lakh to build the Asrayan projects under the Land Ministry. Debiganj upazila nirbahi officer Md, Safiqul Islam implemented the projects work, reports BSS.
Weeklong tree fair begins in Netrakona
NETRAKONA: A weeklong tree fair-2016 began on the premises of Netrakona old collectorate office building yesterday. Netrakona district administration, district forest department and district agricultural extension department jointly organized the tree fair at the directives of the government with a view to popularizing the country-wide tree plantation drive. Deputy commissioner Netrakona Dr. Musfiqur Rahman formally inaugurated the tree fair with a call to plant more plantings of fruit bearing, timber and herbal trees in around all the house premises, educational institutions premises, and other places across the district for keeping the balance of environment, meeting the people’s nutrition demands, rendering their medicare service as well as protecting the bio-diversity of the district from the climate change impact, reports BSS.
