Beating cop: Newly elected Councillor among 8 sent to jail

Eight persons, including newly elected Ward Councillor Sakhawat Hossain Shawkat, were held from city’s Rampura area on Monday night on charge of beating a policeman.
Police arrested Shawkat, unofficially elected councillor of Ward No. 23 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in a case filed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Majid of Special Branch (SB) of Police. The case was registered with Khilgaon Police Station in connection with the policeman beating of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Khilgaon Zone) Assistant Commissioner Zulfiqar Ali.
The other accused are Marufur Rahman Imon, Walid Hossain Ahad, Junayed Hossain Farhan, Mintoo Gazi, Mokhlesur Rahman, Alamgir Hossain Sardar and Mostafizur Rahman Montu, the police official said.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman said that Sawkat, his son and six others were arrested from Khilgaon area on Monday night.
SI Majid filed a case naming Sawkat, his son and six others accusing them of obstructing police official from discharging professional duty.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered to send Sakhawat Hossain Shawkat and seven others to jail in a case filed for beating a police member.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order rejecting their bail petitions.
