IN recent times a new trend in committing murders has come to the fore in which perpetrators openly declare the intent to kill a victim in advance and then carry out the operation true to their motive. The stalker of a schoolgirl entered her home and fatally stabbed her to death on Saturday night in Sunamganj’s Dirai Municipality area. It shows the utter deterioration of law order while the law enforcers are of no help to rural people. Family members alleged that the schoolgirl was attacked because she had refused the man’s indecent proposal. Unable to accept refusal he openly threatened to kill her and later carried out the killing.
The novel method clearly indicates how restless and audacious some of our unruly youngsters have become devoid of moral ethics, values and principles. According to the Officer-In -Charge of the Dirai Police Station the killer was on the run and yet people saw him regularly participating in ruling party’s rallies enjoying impunity from the rule of law. He failed to pass S.S.C exams but regularly moved with a gang of 15 to 20 ruling party youths. The killing could have been avoided had the local police kept an eye on this type of reckless young man. Now that the killing has been done it is useless for police to seek help of local residents to arrest the killer. The point is, since it was known almost to all that he was stalking over the teenage girl, police failure to act is not pardonable and not only the killer, police should also be held accountable for the crime.
The shocking truth is – such avoidable deaths of many school and college girls being committed unimpeded in the country could have been avoided with vigilance on criminals on police report in the locality. Impunity to criminals and protecting sensitive victims are opposed to each other and our present political system is to be blamed in the first place for it. It does not make sense to chase the perpetrators of crime for sometime to show that police are taking action. In fact police inaction is regularly helping to cause such murder and other sexual harassment against women and girls.
According to Mohila Parishad statistics, alone in November 13 victims of stalking were reported to police and four of them had committed suicide while 2 were murdered by derailed youths. In October this year five such incidents were reported where negligible police response was mainly held responsible. Such inaction must stop to stop criminals from killing innocent girls and destroying social peace. The government can’t deny any of its citizens his or her basic right to protection. It is so sad that a girl was stabbed at his home by stalker and escaped. He must be arrested and punished.
