New tech a must to face disaster risk

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said on Monday, adverse impacts of climate change may increase disaster risk and vulnerability in Bangladesh. As such invention of new technologies may face the risk.
“Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country due to its geographical location. The country may experience more natural calamities due to negative impacts of climate change,” said the Minister at a workshop held in the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.
Chairman of Parliamentary Standing
Committee on the Disaster Management and Relief Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, Director General of Disaster Management Riaz Ahmed and UNDP Country Director to Bangladesh Sudipto Mukherjee, among others, addressed the workshop with Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Md Shah Alam in the chair.
Maya stressed the need for inventing new technologies to fight against negative impacts of climate change in order to protect life and livelihood of the people.
He said “Bangladesh is being considered as a role model in disaster management field around the world. We have been able to minimise losses of lives and property caused by different natural calamities from time to time because of different disaster risk reduction and preparedness activities taken by the present government.”
The minister urged all levels of people alongside government and non-government organizations to make Bangladesh a disaster resilient country.
