THE New South Korean President Moon Jae-in who took office Wednesday hinted softening of his country’s policy, unlike his predecessor, towards the North as he said he is ready to visit rival North Korea under the right conditions in search of peace. The left leaning new President, who became leader of the nation at a time when the specter of nuclear war is looming large in the Korean peninsula is opposed to both North’s nuclear-tipped missiles programme but also equally opposed to aggressive military action to deal with the North. The US recently sent the biggest aircraft carrier group and other strike force in Korean water to dismantle North’s nuclear programme.
Moon has replaced former President Park Guen-hye in a mid-term election, as she has been impeached and arrested in March on charges of corruption and misuse of power. She was toeing US policy including military action against North Korea but her departure from power and Moon’s softer stance towards the North has definitely removed the fear of nuclear war in the region. But according to AFP and Reuters reports it could create friction with Washington as the situation is quickly shifting from threats of military action and hints of dialogue that does not quite fit to the US strategy.
In the eyes of many the situation suddenly flared up in the Korean peninsula as US President Donald Trump embarked upon a military course of action with a missile strike in Syria and bombing Afghanistan with the biggest bomb so far to end the longest war. He then suddenly sent the naval strike group to Korean waters to force North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Un to bow down. Many believe he was demonstrating US military might abroad to shore up his devastating failure in domestic politics.
Report said the new South Korean leader had opposed any military action against the North favouring dialogue during presidential campaign. But the US deployed THAAD (Thermal High Altitude Area Defense) missile system in South Korea overnight fearing Moon who was almost sure to win would block the deployment.
The first liberal President over a decade has vowed to reconsider US deployment of THAAD as thousands of South Koreans protested against it in the streets denouncing further militarization of their country. But he may be facing a tough situation to deal with the Trump administration. Moon has promised to “sincerely negotiate” with the United States and China which is equally apprehensive of deployment of THHAD which Washington may use, as it fears to spy on its military operation in the region.
Moon pledge to achieve negotiated peace amid growing worries over the North’s nuclear program makes sense as he is out to repositioning his country’s stance towards the North for peace and seeks help from allies in this regard. We believe his policy that they can’t deny the ruler of the North, there is no choice but to recognize him as a leader would definitely help to calm the situation and make peace. His opposition against new sanction against the North is equally poised to bring good, because punishing people does not serve any cause.
