US Ambassador Mercia Stephens Bloom Bernicat Sunday said the United States is set to begin a new phase of food for peace program in Bangladesh.
The US envoy said this as she paid a courtesy call on Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, MP, at his secretariat office here this noon.
“This minister and his ministry is very very close collaborator with us, specially the USAID. We have a future peace program, hopefully coming on Thursday and there will be a new phase and celebrate conclusion of 2002-2015 plan,” Bernicat said.
The US Envoy said: “I have been here for six months, but still I haven’t met all the ministers and so I am still working to meet each minister. This visit is chance to know the minister to start other work together.”
She said United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been working to make quality healthcare more widely available for poor families through the Smiling Sun network of health clinics. Under the project, the USAID provided with $200 million to improve healthcare services focusing on women’s and children’s health in Bangladesh through Smiling Sun clinics, Bernicat said.
USAID Mission Director Janina Jaruzelski, Director Mustapha El Hamzaouri and Program Management Specialist Mohammad Nurnobi were present during the meeting.
The Ambassador said the USAID focuses on two key challenges for achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of Bangladesh.
