A Dhaka court on Thursday placed five students of Dhaka College on a two-day police remand each in a case filed over the killing of Nahid Mia during the students-traders clash in Dhaka’s New Market area on April 19.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shanta Akter passed the order after Md Tariqul Alam Jewel, inspector of Detective Branch of police, produced the accused before court and sought a seven-day remand for each to interrogate them.
Those remanded are Abdul Kaiyum, a student of Accounting Department, Palash and Irfan, both from Social Science Department, Foysal from the Bangla department and Junayed from Islamic History department of Dhaka College.
Earlier, the Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested them from different parts of the capital in connection with the murder of Nahid Mia.
AKM Hafiz Akter, additional commissioner of the DB Police, confirmed their arrest at a press conference held yesterday at the DMP Media Centre.
He said that these five were arrested for their direct involvement in the clashes between the Dhaka College students and New Market shopkeepers that claimed two lives.
Two murder cases were filed at New Market police station in connection with the clashes, he said.
“Five people took part in the attack from the front. All of them had locally-made weapons”, said Hafiz Akhter, adding, “After analyzing different videos and CCTV footages, they were identified and arrested from different areas of Dhaka.”
“Kaiyum, a Dhaka College student, was the first to strike Nahid. During the clashes, he was dressed in a white and blue striped T-shirt and carrying a steel pipe,” he said. “The police are still looking for the youth seen in the viral photo of hacking Nahid,” he added.
Nahid, a deliveryman for an Elephant Road computer accessories store, was attacked and injured during clashes between Dhaka College students and New Market shop owners and workers. A store worker named Morsalin was also wounded on the head by a thrown brickbat during the violence. The two later died in hospital.
The families of the victims later filed murder cases over their deaths with New Market Police Station. The Detective Branch is investigating the murder cases.
