The government has now issued a policy for admission to the government secondary schools across the country, also keeping aside a 40 percent quota for local students in Dhaka city.
The Education Ministry issued the policy on Tuesday, a day after publishing a set of guidelines for admission to the secondary, junior secondary and combined primary sections at private schools, and school and colleges aiming to make the admission activities more transparent and time-befitting.
The new policy for the government schools says the authorities will have to reserve 40 percent seats for the students of its catchment area in Dhaka city while the rest seats will remain open for all.
It says students for admission to Class-1 will have to be selected through lottery all over the country. At the same time, there must be a waiting list with students beyond the merit list.
However, students at Class-IX will be admitted based on their results of Junior School Certificate (JSC) or Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations. Students passing the JSC and JDC examinations will get the priority to get admitted to their own institution.
Students from other schools must be selected by the admission committee concerned, the policy said.
The committee may divide schools in clusters keeping in mind the location of the schools and advantages and disadvantages of the students and there will be an option for students on the admission form to choose their schools.
The policy also asked all the government secondary schools in the capital to publish information related to admission process, admission fees and result processing on their website in 2016 academic year while across the country from 2017 academic year.
