The newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday said they are determined to discharge their all responsibilities in line with the Constitution.
“We are determined to hold free, fair and impartial polls according to the Constitution,” he told journalists at the Election Commission Secretariat in city.
Earlier, the CEC and four other Election Commissioners took oath at Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge. Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha administered the oath of office at a function, conducted by Supreme Court Registrar General Syed Aminul Islam.
The other four members of the EC are former Additional Secretary Mahbub Talukder, former Secretary Md Rafikul Islam, retired District and Session Judge Begum Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain.
The CEC said they will be uncompromising in discharging their Constitutional duties.
“We have taken oath for discharging Constitutional responsibilities. However, our main challenge is to arrange free, fair and credible elections,” the CEC added.
Replying to a query he said he does not belong to any political parties.
“I don’t belong to any political party and I was not an activist of Janatar Mancha,” he mentioned.
He added taking experience and knowledge from the Election Commission and using its skill they will do their job.
“I’m seeking supports from the government, all political parties, civil society members and media. We want to achieve all political parties’ trust and confidence by creating a friendly environment. Nobody can influence us,” the CEC said.
President Abdul Hamid on February 6 formed the new EC with former Secretary KM Nurul Huda as the new CEC. The President appointed the five from the ten names referred by the search committee.
Polls to these 18 Upazilas are due on 6th March and the EC headed by newly appointed CEC K M Nurul Huda will conduct those.
Though BNP has reservation about the new EC, led by KM Nurul Huda, party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said their party will join the local body polls under the EC as they did it during the Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led Commission.
Besides, the first test for the newly constituted EC is to hold a municipal poll in the hill district Rangamati’s Baghaichhari on Saturday.
Polls will be held for the post of chairman in Kurhigram sadar, Barisal’s Banariparha, Gouranadi, Jhalakathhi’s Kanthhalia, Patuakhali’s Rangabali, Comilla’s Adarsha sadar, Pabna’a Sujanagar, and Kishoreganj’s Hossainpur.
