Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam on Sunday said a new city will be built on the banks of the Turag River near Dhaka and the old Dhaka will be rebuilt in a new way.
“The work is underway to build a state-of-the-art scenic city on the banks of the Turag River with all modern amenities, including good environment. In addition, the old Dhaka will be rebuilt in a modern way that will be a city worth seeing. If this is done, the people of the country will no longer have to travel abroad rather foreigners will come to visit Dhaka city,” he said.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting at the auditorium of Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) here on the occasion of the Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He also attended an inauguration ceremony of ‘Sobar Dhaka App’ organized by Dhaka North City Corporation there.
The minister said that the dream city of Dhaka will be built by overcoming all the challenges to give a clean and modern livable city to the city-dwellers by freeing all the canals of Dhaka city from the illegal canal-grabbers.
If the canals can be connected to each other, then Dhaka will definitely be more beautiful than abroad, he added.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina dreams of such a city and her government is working relentlessly for fulfilling that dream by taking pragmatic steps.
With Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam in the chair, the event was attended, among others, by State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division Junaid Ahmed Palak, Dhaka north unit of Bangladesh Awami League president Sheikh Bazlur Rahman and its general secretary SM Mannan Kachi as special guests.
