Accusing the ruling party of obstructing the electioneering of its party candidates in the upazila parishad polls scheduled to be held on Monday, BNP on Friday alleged that the ‘biased’ face of the current Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) is getting exposed with the passage of time.
Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, its senior joint secretary
general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also alleged that CEC KM Nurul Huda is blowing the whistle of his predecessor Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.
“Like polls in the past, still now BNP candidates and their supporters are being obstructed from submitting their nomination papers, carrying out campaign, and their loudspeakers, leaflets and posters are being destroyed, their houses are being attacked, and even they’re being given death threats. Two people have already been killed over the elections to only a few upazilas,” he said.
Rizvi further said, “Even after the incidents, the current CEC is blowing the whistle of Kazi Rakibuddin. The country’s people think the CEC is going ahead with a licence to ensure the victory of Awami League candidates. In fact, he’s acting as per the directives coming from the Prime Minister’s Office.”
He alleged that Awami League men are attacking BNP candidates and their supporters and blocking them from carrying out election campaign in Pabna’s Sujanagar, Barisal’s Gouranadi, Jhalakati’s Nalchhiti, and Rangabali and Galachipa upazilas of Patuakhali.
The BNP leader also alleged that the ruling party activists are threatening their party’s agents not to go to the polling stations on the election day.
He said though their party has joined the polls as part of their movement to revive democracy, the ruling party men are destroying the atmosphere of a fair election by flexing their muscles.
Rizvi alleged the Election Commission has not taken any visible move so far to neutralise the administration and ensure a fair election though it has such authority.
