New areas have gone under the flood waters in several districts, including Bogra, Nilphamari, Sirajgonj, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Faridpur, Sylhet and Sunamgonj. Water from beyond the borders and heavy rainfall inside the country have worsened the flood situation. About 10 lakh people have been marooned, educational institutions are remaining closed for being used as shelter centres for the flood affected people, who are crying for foods, drinking water and medicines.
According to flood forecasting and warning center, the water in the Dharla river has increased by 30 centimeter in last 24 hours and is flowing 70 centimeter (cm) above the danger level at Kurigram point.
The water in the Teesta is flowing seven cm above the danger level at Dalia point, in the Brahmaputra 61 cm at Chilmari point. In the Jamuna above the danger level by two to 36 cm in Bogra district. The water in the Padma is flowing above the danger level in Rajbari and Faridpur districts, in the Surma flowing by 30 to 77 cm above danger level at Kanaighat and Sunamganj points, and also in the Atrai and the Kangsha rivers. In Sylhet: according to our Correspondent, the flood has worsened with the main rivers flowing above the danger level at several points. The Amolshit, Surma and the Kushiara rivers were flowing above the danger level.
“Many villagers have been evacuated from the flood-hit areas, but many others are still stranded. The shortage of drinking water and food has intensified the sufferings of the marooned people at Companiganj, Fenchuganj, Balaganj and Osmaninagar upazila.
Floodwaters engulfed low-lying areas of the Sylhet city. The chairman of Companiganj upazila said that four unions have been isolated from the upazila headquarters. Most of the families living along riverside are in fear of losing their croplands and homesteads. all schools and colleges in upazila have been closed, he added.
In Sunamganj: The flood situation in Sunamganj has worsened with the main rivers flowing above the danger level at several points. The Surma, the Jadukata and the Cholti rivers are flowing above the danger level. Floodwater had marooned over one lakh people in the district.
“Many villagers have been evacuated from the flood-hit areas, but many others are still trapped. The shortage of foods and drinking water has aggravated the sufferings of the marooned people at Barapara, Pashchim Bazar, Machh Bazar, Shologhar and Nabinagar under Sadar upazila, Nowapara, Mohabbatpur, Chokbazar, Payekpara, Lakkhipur, Kushiara and Boktarpur under Doarabazar upazila, Maharam, Lakmar, Lamakata under Tahirpur upazila, and two villages of Biswambharpur upazila.
Floodwaters engulfed low-lying areas of the district town, Dharmapasha, Sadar and Tahirpur upazilas and entered Biswambharpur, Doarabazar, Chhatak and Jamalganj upazilas.
M Idris Ali, Chairman of Doarabazar upazila, visited flood affected area on Thursday he said, Lakkhipur, Banglabazar and Narsinghpur unions have been isolated from the upazila headquarters. The Balicherra dyke has been damaged, six villages have been submerged, and 18 points of the embankment have become risky.
Most of the families living along riverside are in fear of losing their croplands and homesteads. Shemgaon Government Primary School is under three feet of water, and all schools and colleges in Doarabazar upazila have been closed, he added.
WDB Sunamganj officials said that floodwater had marooned over One lakh people in the district.
In Nilphamari: flood situation is still above the danger level in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district.
At least 20,000 people have become marooned in 16 villages of the two upazilas.
Floodwater has already washed away 300 houses, 2200 acres of cropsland, hit five schools, four bridges, two community clinics and about 20 kilometer rural roads, according to upazila administration.
The river is swelling fast as India opened all the 52 gates of its Gojaldoba barrage in the upstream to release the ‘excess’ water stored from heavy rainfall in its territories.
With the rise of Teesta river, water in other major rivers of the district like Charal Kata, Deonai, Buri Teesta, Buri khora, Jamuneswari, Nautara and Panga have also swelling inundating 1,000 acres of jute, vegetable fields and aman seed beds.
Rezaul Karim, UNO of Dimla who visited the affected people on flood control dam at noon of today told journalists, “We are monitoring and arranging drinking water and one time meal for the victims everyday.”
In Bogra: The swelling Jamuna has affected 50 thousand people of nine unions under Sariakandi upazila. The residents are anxious as fresh areas are being submerged everyday. Sarwar Alam, the Upazila Project Implementation Officer said, nine out of 12 unions become flood affected in the upazila. 10 thousand family became victim of the floodwater.
In Jamalpur : More than 50 thousand people have been marooned after the flood situation in the district worsened. Around 100 villages have been submerged in floodwater in Islampur, Dewanganj and Motherganj upazila.
