Netrakona trawler capsize death toll rises to 12, five arrested

The death toll from the capsize of a trawler in the river Gumai under Kamlakanda upazila in Netrakona district climbed to 12 with the recovery of two more bodies at Dharmapasha upazila in Sunamganj district on Friday.
The bodies of Ratan Mia, 35, son of Hannan Mia, and Monira Akter, 5, were recovered from Haldi Beel under Dharmapasha upazila in Sunamganj district on Friday morning and early afternoon respectively, said Kalmakanda Police Station officer-in-charge Md Mazharul Karim.
 Both the deceased were the inhabitants of village Madhyanagar Kamarura under Dharmapasha upazila.
At about 10:00am on Wednesday, the trawler carrying 35 people capsized when a sand-laden boat hit it, leaving 12 people drowned. The accident happened when the trawler reached near village Rajnagar under Barkhapon union under Kamlakanda upazila in the Gumai River.
Later, divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence conducted a rescue operation till Thursday afternoon and succeeded to rescue eight people alive, while others managed to reach the river bank by swimming. The divers also retrieved 10 bodies from the trawler.
A five-member probe committee was formed with additional district magistrate Abdullah Al Mahmud to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit investigation report within seven working days.
Meanwhile, Abdul Wahab, husband of drowned housewife Lutfunnahar, filed a case against six people, including the trawler owner and driver with Kamlakanda police station. After filing the case, police arrested five accused.
Kamlakanda Police Station OC Md Mazharul Karim said the arrested persons were sent to the court pleading for placing them on a five-day remand.
