The Northern Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) has argued for electricity price hike Tk 1.3 per unit at consumers’ level while the technical committee of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) opined for the price hike at 0.89 taka per unit.
NESCO Managing Director Jakiul Islam placed the above proposal in the concluding session
of power tariff hike hearing at the TCB Bhaban in the city’s Karwan Bazar on Wednesday.
NESCO, responsible for electricity distribution in Rajshahi and Rangpur reasons, placed the electricity tariff hike as per Bangladesh Power Development Board’s (BPDB) power tariff hike proposal for bulk level.
BERC chairman Monowar Islam, BERC’s Members Mizanur Rahman, Rahman Murshed, Abdul Aziz Khan and Mahmudul Hoque Bhuiyan conducted the hearing.
Representatives from Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), different left wing political parties and trade bodies were also present there.
NESCO Managing Director said most of the municipalities and local government wings were not paying electricity bills regularly.
In the hearing Jakiul Islam said that his company has been suffering from financial crisis as nine months’ electricity bills of some municipalities are still remained unrealized which dues stood at Tk 221 crore.
On February 20, the BPDB) sent a proposal to BERC, asking to hike the retail price of electricity by Tk. 0.72 per unit.
The BERC arranged the public hearing over the proposed price hike of electricity.
