Nepal lauds Bangladesh’s socio-economic dev

The visiting Nepalese Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi on Sunday appreciated the socio-economic development of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The appreciation came when the Nepalese foreign secretary paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the latter’s office here this morning.
Bairagi is visiting Bangladesh in connection with the 2nd round of Bilateral Consultations between the two Foreign Secretaries of Bangladesh and Nepal, according to a foreign ministry statement.
He is leading a six-member delegation comprising representatives of different ministries of Nepal, including the ministries of energy, commerce and higher education.
Referring to the humanitarian crisis relating to the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals, the Nepalese foreign secretary lauded the role of Bangladesh government in handling the situation.
During the meeting, they discussed different bilateral and regional issues and stressed on comprehensive engagement and further cooperation between the two countries in the areas of connectivity, trade and investment, power sector cooperation, tourism, culture and people-to-people contact.
Highlighting the historically warm and friendly ties of Kathmandu with Dhaka, Bairagi appreciated the support of the government of Bangladesh during the devastating earthquake of Nepal in 2015.
He also apprised Ali of the recent political developments including the upcoming election in Nepal.
Later, the Bangladesh foreign minister received the newly appointed Secretary General of BIMSTEC M Shahidul Islam at the ministry.
Ali congratulated Shahidul Islam for taking over as the Secretary General of BIMSTEC and expressed his happiness over being the first Bangladeshi diplomat to have occupied this post.
The new Secretary General thanked the Foreign Minister for extending all out support and assistance to him and the Secretariat to facilitate his smooth assumption of the charge as the Secretary General of BIMSTEC and for smooth functioning of the Secretariat.
