BSS, Kunming :
Nepal hopes it will get benefit from improved regional connectivity through bilateral and multilateral arrangements and agreements like the latest Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) signed between Bangladesh and India.
Commerce and Supply Minister of Nepal Sunil Bahadur Thapa welcomed the LBA saying that Nepal would support any agreement, which would help strengthen regional connectivity.
“It is a very good gesture; and of course anything is related to improve the connectivity, which benefits South Asia, is most welcomed”, the minister told BSS in an interview on the sideline of the 3rd China-South Asia Expo (CSA). The five-day expo began on June 12 in Kunming, the capital city of the Yunnan province of China.
The Nepalese minister talked about the LBA, port facility and regional initiatives to face the aftermath of any natural calamity like earthquake.
About the LBA, signed between Bangladesh and India during the recent Dhaka visit of prime minister of India Narendra Modi, Thapa said, “We support all good agreements here in South Asia because we are united and connected”.
He, however, could not make any elaborate comment on the LBA as he did not get time to read the agreement. “I have not got the time to read the agreement because it was signed only a few days ago. So, without reading the full text it will be difficult for me to make any comment because I am a responsible person, representing the government of Nepal. Once I read the agreement, I would be able to make comment more elaborately.”
The minister said he believes Nepal is rather a land linked than a landlocked country. But, the connectivity remained weak for years and started to improve only two years ago on various regional initiatives covering different areas.
“I think in the last two years we were moving forward in terms of not only regional connectivity by land, but by air, media and IT too”, he said.
Regarding Nepal’s interest in using Bangladesh’s sea ports, Thapa said that he had ministerial level bilateral meeting on this issue and also met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when he was in Bangladesh last year, and when he met her last time in Kunming.
