Staff Reporter :Police have confirmed the identity of the ‘Neo JMB’ trainer Murad alias Jahangir who was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with cops during a raid on a ‘militant hideout’ in the city’s Rupnagar area on Friday night. Locals told police that the real name of Murad, who was staying on the top floor of a six-storey building in the area, was actually Mohammad Zahidul Islam, 37. He was major of the army and retired from the force willingly. He was son of Nurul Islam, and Jebunnahar Islam. He father was a former police sub-inspector, hailing from Chandpur area in Panchthubi union of Comilla Sadar upazila.The locals denied having any idea about Murad’s militant link and only informed that he had come to the area around 4 to 5 months ago.They identified him (Murad) after watching his photos on television and in newspapers.The locals added that Murad’s father had told them that he had gone to Canada after quitting his Bangladesh Army job.Sub-inspector Shahin of Kotowali Model Police Station said following an order of a high official, a police team went to his village in the search of Murad’s family members. There were found only tenants at the house.The Director of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate Lieutenant Colonel Rashidul Hasan Khan told the reporters that no member named Jahangir or Murad is in the army.He also claimed that no one in this name had retired from the army. “We are investigating into the matter seriously,” the ISPR director said. Earlier, Murad was killed and three policemen, including the officer-in-charge of Rupnagar Police Station, suffered wounds during the raid on a ‘militant den’ at Rupnagar in Mirpur on Friday night.Besides, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) authorities have written to police urging to take away the bodies of killed militants, which neither the families nor anyone is claiming yet.Abu Bakar Siddique, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, confirmed about receiving a letter from DMC authorities in this regard.Currently, seven freezing chambers at DMC are out of order, said Sohel Mahmud, assistant professor at the hospital’s Forensic and Medicine Department.”The remaining is being used to keep the body of the militants,” he said.
