Chattogram Bureau :
Full of mud and garbage, Jatisangha Park in port city’s posh Panchlaish area has virtually turned into a landfill now, due to a lack of maintenance by the authorities concerned.
There are a number of leisure parks in the Chittagong , including the amusement park at Foy’s Lake, Karnaphuli Sishu Park at Agrabad, Mini Bangladesh at Chandgaon and Jatisongho Park at Panchlaish.
Of the parks, people have free access to only three, including the Jatisangha Park. However, this park, operated by Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), has been in a disappointed state for more than three years due to an ownership dispute.
Located in Panchlaish area, Jatisangha Park is the only recreational place for residents of Panchlaish, Chawk Bazar, Katalganj and Joy Nagar areas, said locals.
Chattogram city residents have been suffering due to poor garbage and sewerage management, which is slowly turning the city into an unlivable place. Locals and civil society members have expressed dissatisfaction.Rubbish heaps are seen everywhere, and it is difficult to walk around the city due to bad odor.
The city corporation seems to be uncoordinated in managing the waste, and workers can be seen collecting rubbish around noon and even during rush hours. Sometimes, rubbish enters roadside drains and clogs those up leading to water logging.Hence all sorts of rubbish, including biomedical waste, are put in the same dustbin creating serious public health hazards.
Garbage washed away by rainwater pollutes ponds, canals and rivers, while the underground water is contaminated through leaching, According to CCC officials, around 1,350 tonnes of garbage is disposed of every day by around 50 lakh inhabitants of the city.
Residents of the area also shared his sentiments. Abdul Aziz, a local, said the authorities must take initiatives to save the park. According to sources, 12 people are appointed to look after the park. It remains open from 4pm to 8pm daily, said security guard Bipul Barua. He said around 20-25 people visit the park every day.
CCC constructed a swimming pool in place of the pond in 2013. Almost half the area of the two-acre park was taken up to build the pool, which according to locals, remained mostly unused.
Town Planner Engr. Subhash Barua said the pool was constructed in an unplanned way. “When CCC initiates any project, the authorities do not seek advice from town planners,” alleged Barua, also vice-president of Forum for Planned Chattogram.
