People suffer when they go to the National Identity (NID) card wing of the Election Commission (EC) at Agargaon in the city to update their personal information.
Witness said, applicants become frustrated at the slow service in the office. Moreover, they do not find any official at the NID booth despite waiting for hours in queue.
“I came here at 9am though it is nearing 2pm. I am yet to find anyone, who can tell me what I should do,” said Halima Akhter, who came from Gazaria, in Munshiganj on Sunday.
There was a huge crowd in and outside the office as the deadline to correct information expires this month.
As per rule, the NID is supposed to be delivered within 30 working days from the date of filing application, but it does not become possible due to non cooperation mentality of the field officials of NID Wings.
Sources said, the process was messy, as they had to go to several places to complete and submit application forms. Many others complained that it was the Election Commission’s fault that they were being subjected to the unnecessary troubles.
“My name is Akbar Hossain, but it is Md Matbar Hossain in the NID card.
I have my birth certificate which carries my correct name,” said Akber.
“I cannot get a job because employers don’t want to hire me due to the mismatched information. I have been here, waiting in queue for three and a half hours, but to no purpose,” Akbar said.
Sources said, EC officials at upazila level ask the people to go to the EC head office at Agargaon. But they are sent back to the upazila office, saying that it is their duty.
“I applied for correction of my name’s spelling in the card around a month ago. They (NID officials) asked me to come on April 9 to take delivery of the card. But now they are saying that card has not been printed yet,” said Niaz Rashid, who came from Tongi area.
“It is a total mess. The officials mistakenly wrote my husband’s name. They made the mistakes, not we, but we are suffering for it,” said a woman, who came from Tongi, wishing to remain unnamed.
An NID wing official told The New Nation that every day they received more than 500 applications for correction and 400 applications for replacement of lost cards. The wing delivers around 2,000 cards after correction every day.
In response to the allegations, NIDW Director General Brigadier General Sultanuzzaman Md Saleh Uddin told The New Nation, sometimes it takes longer than usual to verify information of the cardholders and that’s the main reason behind the delay in service delivery.
