NCC elections will be free, fair: RO

Mahfuza Akhter, Regional Election Officer, Dhaka Region and Returning Officer of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Election – 2021 informed that the next NCC elections would be free and fair. Elections will be held in 27 wards through EVM. The whole election will be held with EVM, not partially.
She said this at a view exchange meeting with journalists on the occasion of Narayanganj City Corporation Election 2021 held at the election office premises in Narayanganj on Monday. President of Narayanganj Press Club Khondoker Shah Alam and General Secretary Sharif Uddin Sabuj along with journalists from various electronics media, print media and online news portals were present at that time.
Election Officer Mahfuza also said that the schedule of Narayanganj City Corporation area was announced on November 30. The election will be held on January 18, 2022. In between we will do various activities continuously. NCC has 27 wards. One Returning Officer has been recruited for every 3 wards. Six of them are officers working in this district. The other 3 will come from outside and perform their duties. The commission is trying to conduct the election with those who are already regular officers. So that they can use the skills they have about the area.
“Five years ago, we used EVMs in some cases in the district elections,” he said. Now 5 more years have passed. Now we are doing everything digitally. EVMA has been used in Rangpur, Comilla city elections to its continuity.
We have done Chittagong city elections. We have also done EVM in some parliamentary elections in Dhaka. Now that all the activities are digital, why can’t we elect through EVM in 190 centers in NCC?
The election officer further said that according to the code of conduct – 2018, the contesting candidates have to work in the constituency. After giving symbols to the candidates, they will be able to run the campaign. The overall electoral activities have to be done as per the rules.
Narayanganj City Corporation has 4 police stations. Mayoral candidates in 4 police stations will be able to campaign with 4 mics. They can set up four camps. They will be able to do miking from 2 pm to 8 pm. In addition, general and reserved councilors will be able to use 1 mic and a camp in their respective area.
