Shah Alam Nur :
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is going to set up a tax office in each upazila to identify tax payable business houses in divisional headquarters and district towns in order to bring them under the tax net.
The NBR has taken the decision with the view to arrest gigantic target of revenue collection amounting to Tk 176,370 crore for the fiscal 2015-16. Of the total
amount, the Income Tax wing will collect the lion share, which is Tk 65,932 crore.
The target for collection from VAT has been fixed at Tk 63,902 crore while Tk 46,536 crore will come from customs duty.
‘We have no other option. We have to expand the tax net, as the government is not going to impose new tax in the coming budget. So this is the only option,’ a senior NBR official told The New Nation on Thursday.
He said that with the increasing of the number of income tax payable individuals at the upazila level, the country’s economy is getting stronger day by day.
Currently, 85 upazilas of the country have income tax offices and those will increase day by day.
In his budget speech, the finance minister have given some ideas about making the income tax submission procedure even easier.
But later the board decided to reduce it to Tk 135,028 crore due to the political instability in the first three months of the calendar year and sent it to the Finance Ministry for final approval.
The tax net will be widened with proper support from the elected representatives at the upazila level, said Md Abdur Razzaque.
He said that the field offices should hold dialogues with civil society members, businesses and well-off citizens of the upazila level with the support of the elected representatives.
The tax authority has recently begun holding such dialogues to get more people under the tax net.
Taxmen believe that many grassroots people who have taxable incomes still remain out of the tax net due to absence of tax offices in upazilas.
