NBR to observe ‘VAT Day’ on Dec 10

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will observe ‘VAT Day’ on December 10 and ‘VAT Week’ from December 10 to 15 to encourage people to pay Value Added Tax (VAT) for the development of the country.
“Our main objective is to ensure good governance and a modern system so that people can pay VAT properly. The programme will also create a good relation between the VAT officials and payers which will ultimately help increase revenue mobilization,” said NBR chairman Md Nojibur Rahman at a press conference on Thursday.
The slogan of this year’s ‘VAT Day’ and ‘VAT Week’ is ‘VAT Dichhe Janogan, Desher Hochhe Unnayan’.
Rahman said the NBR is taking various innovative steps to encourage people to pay tax and the main attraction of this year’s income tax fair was TAX ID Card.
The NBR has decided to give VAT collectors ‘VAT Honor card’ for the first time, he said, adding that establishments having record of submitting VAT returns for 12 months in a raw will get this card.
He said the number of establishments submitting VAT return has been increased to 60,000 from 32,000 and of them, 35,000 establishments have submitted return regularly.
“These 35,000 establishments will get VAT Honour Card,” he added.
Like previous year, the NBR will honour the highest VAT paying individuals and establishments. It will also honour media organizations and journalists for creation awareness among people about VAT.
Replying to a question, the NBR chairman said revenue collection witnessed a 16.08 percent growth during the July-November period of the current fiscal year (FY18), which was 16.04 percent during the same period of the last fiscal year (FY17).
