The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has filed case against the S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Ltd, a concern of S Alam Group, for evading around Tk 200 crore duties.
The revenue board claimed that the company evaded the amount through importing raw materials for finished suger by taking bonded warehouse facilities, according to a NBR documents.
The Customs Bond Commissionerate, Chattogram has unearthed the duty evasion worth over Tk 198.70 crore and filed the case against the sugar mill, it said.
The document said the company has imported 1,25,057.730 mectric tonnes raw materials through 27 Bills of Entry (B/E) in different times of the current year by taking home consumption warehouse facilities.
But the officials did not find the quantity, when they visited the warehouses of the company in persons as the company has removed the rest of the raw materials illegally, the document said.
The officials found only 32,741 metric tonnes against the imported 1,25,057.730 metric tonnes. That means, the rest 92,316.730 metric tonnes raw materials have been removed illegally and the duty value of the removed goods is Tk 198.70 crore, the document said.
The company has also violated customs rules by removing of the raw materials from the warehouses illegally, the document said.
Following this, the Chattogram Customs Bond Commissionerate has filed a case instantly and issued a show-cause notice against the company asking explanation on why it would not be given punishment including cancellation of license for the duty evasion.
NBR will take legal action against the company, if it fails to respond within a certain period, the document said.
AKM Mahbubur Rahman, Commissioner of the commissionerate, told The New Nation, “No mercy shall be given to the irregularity whichever company commits it.”
“We are firm on discharging bonded warehouse facilities in transparent way to the businesses,” he added.
Subrata Kumer Bhowmick, Executive Director (Finance) of the S Alam Group, said “I am still unaware about the amount of the evaded duties. So, I can’t comment on it.”
