The National Board of Revenue (NBR) plans to bring additional 3.5 lakh eligible people under tax net. The field-level income tax offices already started survey to identify the eligible person for paying tax by the end of this fiscal year. The survey started in 31 tax zones across the country on November 2, said the NBR sources.
According to the plan, the field offices are working under the leadership of tax commissioners to find out the new and potential taxpayers from each zone.
The government has a target to raise the number of active taxpayers to 30 lakh in next four years as the present government completes its office.
As per the special drive plan, the NBR team will visit houses, shops and other commercial establishments in the city’s posh areas to find out the potential taxpayers. The officials will take support from service agencies to scrutinise information related to income, wealth and property of the potentially eligible taxpayers.
NBR officials said the survey teams are collecting information related to national identity cards, trade licences and other business documents from people having income from house or business properties and from service or other professions.
The teams are also requesting people to register themselves with eTIN with their national identity card voluntarily if they have the income over Tk 2.50 lakh annually.
According to the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2014, prepared by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) of the United Nations, less than 1 per cent of the populations pay taxes in Bangladesh.
