Economic Reporter :
National Board of Revenue (NBR) has brought 5.38 lakh fresh taxpayers under the tax net during July-April period of fiscal 2017-18.
The NBR planned to find 5.26 lakh new income taxpayers in the current fiscal year (FY18). But the revenue authorities have been able to fulfill its target in 10 months, two month ahead of ending the FY18.
“We planned to find 5.26 lakh new taxpayers in FY19 but the NBR has found 5 lakh 38 thousand and 891 news taxpayers in 10 months, two months before the closing of the fiscal year FY18,” said NBR member (Tax Survey and Inspection) Dr Mahbubur Rahman.
Tax survey and inspection wing of the NBR will continue its hunt for new taxpayers in the next two months of the current fiscal, he told.
“We’ll not stop our efforts to hunt for new taxpayers just because of achieving the target, rather we’ve decided to intensify our drive to find new taxpayers to boost collection of revenue. We want to find two lakh more fresh taxpayers in the remaining two months of the current fiscal,” said Rahman.
He said all tax zones have been given necessary directions in this regard.
“We’ve already sent letter to all tax zones with necessary instructions,” he added.
Rahman said flats, apartment buildings, commercial complex have been built in different city corporations, municipalities and unions across the country and a good number of these structures have remained out of tax net.
“We’ve planned to bring such property under the tax net. Survey will be intensified through collecting information from secondary sources such as city corporations, municipalities, power distribution authorities and registrar of joint stocks,” he said.
Rahman said there are a total of 34.60 lakh e-TIN holders in the country at present. He hoped that this figure will cross 35 lakh marks in the current fiscal year.
