Nayeem Hasan, who came in as the replacement of the injured Mehedi Hasan Miraz for the ongoing two-match Test series between hosts Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, is uncertain to take part in the second Test, scheduled to be held in Dhaka from May 23.
The rookie off-spinner, who grabbed six wickets for 105 runs in the first innings, suffered a finger injury while fielding during the visitors’ second innings on Wednesday, the fourth day of the Chattogram Test that ended in a draw.
Despite the injury, the right-arm spinner had the courage to bowl as many as 14 overs on the fifth day yesterday to support Taijul Islam and Shakib Al Hasan, the two bowlers who did the bulk of bowling to force a victory in the Tigers’ favour.
Habibul Bashar, former captain of Bangladesh turned national selector, informed the journalists of Nayeem’s status yesterday.
“A fracture was detected. He still bowled with it today [yesterday],” Bashar informed while adding that Nayeem could still end up playing the second and final Test of the ongoing series.
“Whether he can play [upcoming Test] or not will depend on further assessment. He isn’t ruled out yet but is unlikely to play of course.”
Before Nayeem, Bangladesh suffered injury setbacks in the just-concluded Test as injury to pacer Shoriful Islam sidelined him from the Chattogram Test.
