The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Defence on Wednesday queried over the progress of government’s resettlement programme to shift around one million displaced Rohingyas to Noakhali’s Bahasanchar from Cox’s Bazar.
In this regard, the Bangladesh Navy informed the parliamentary committee that they were working ‘fast’ to upgrade the infrastructure of the remote island in a bid to rehabilitate the Rohingyas as soon as possible.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Defence in its 27th meeting held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban yesterday also expressed
concern over the nonstop influx of Rohingya people since August 25 being driven out by the Myanmar army.
Presided over by committee’s Chairman Major General [retd] Subid Ali Bhuiyan, among others, Colonel [retd] Faruk Khan, Md Mahabubur Rahman, Ilias Uddin Mollah, Mahmud-us-Samad Chowdhury and Hosne Ara Begum attended the meeting.
On behalf of Bangladesh Navy, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff [Material] Rear Admiral M Shafiul Azam elaborated the parliamentary committee about the ongoing development works of the naval forces in the Bhasan Char.
Meanwhile, Major General Siddiqur Rahman of Bangladesh Army informed the committee that army personnel were working to distribute relief materials, setting up of 10,000 toilets and temporary camps for the Rohingyas now staying in the southeastern district of Cox’s Bazar.
Defence Secretary Akhter Hossain Bhuiyan and senior officials of army, navy and air force were also present in the meeting.
About the government’s above decision, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya on October 17said that Bangladesh Navy working in the Bhasan Char had been to accommodate Rohingyas as per the Prime Minister’s directive.
“We’ve started works in Bhasan Char. A total of 1.5 lakh makeshift tents are to be installed for Rohingyas. International Organization for Migration [IOM] assured the government of providing all sorts of assistance…..The Kulupalong camp is a temporary one, which is located on 3,000 acres of land,”Maya had said.
Earlier on October 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit in UK, said that the hapless Rohingya people who fled to Bangladesh will be shifted from Cox’s Bazar to “Bhasan Char”, an island near Hatiya under Noakhali district .
