National Vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign-2016 began in the district as elsewhere in the country yesterday morning.
Professor Farhad Hossain MP inaugurated the campaign at Meherpur general hospital premises.
Deputy commissioner Porimal Singh, Civil Surgeon, Dr Abdul Halim, hospital super Dr Mizanur Rahman and sadar upazila health and family planning officer Dr Alok Kumar Das were present on the occasion.
In the campaign each of 8,942 children aged between 6 months and 11 months will be fed blue coloured vitamin A capsule while each of the 57,274 children aged from 12 months to 59 months will be fed red coloured vitamin A capsule in the district.
A total of 489 centers have been set up in the district to make the campaign a success.
Sylhet Correspondent adds: National Vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign-2016 began in the city and nine upazilas of the district as elsewhere in the country this (Saturday) morning.
Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) and Civil Surgeon Office launched the campaign setting target to administer vitamin ‘A’ Plus capsules to more than 5.00 lakh children under five years of age.
The campaign begins from 8am in 99 centres simultaneously and will continue uninterruptedly till 4pm. A total of 2,563 outreach vaccination centres were set up by Sylhet Civil Surgeon office.
Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) set up 90 centres including 120 permanent ones in its all 30 wards to carry out the programme.
Over 3,220 supervisors in the 13 upazilas of the district will supervise the ‘A’ Plus campaign at their respective jurisdictions in the Sylhet city and district.
A total of 2,563 vaccination centres will be set up by Sylhet Civil Surgeon office.
Besides 8660 volunteers and health workers in 13 upazilas in the district will carry out the drive in next four days from July 16 as a follow up programme through visiting doorsteps of the households to cover up dropped out children, civil surgeon office sources said.
SCC sources said several mobile teams consisting of 278 members in Sylhet city and 899 members in the district have been engaged to feed oral vaccines to the children at rail, bus and steamer stations as well as other places.

BSS from Rangpur adds: Mayor (State Minister) of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu has said immunisation of the under-five babies is essential for reducing their death risks by increasing disease resistant capacities.
“The parents should come forward for providing Vitamin A Plus Capsule to every under-five baby also to ensure their normal growth, prevent night blindness and other vision problems,” he said.
Jhantu, also valiant freedom fighter, said this while inaugurating the National Vitamin A Plus Campaign 16 July- 2016 through administering Vitamin A Plus Capsules to the under five babies at his office here today as the chief guest.
With Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Ruhul Amin in the chair, its Secretary Fazlul Kabir and Medical Officer Dr Kamruzzaman Ibne Taz attended the occasion as the special guests.
Narrating importance of providing Vitamin A Plus Capsule to every baby, the City Mayor stressed on making the campaign successful to prevent various diseases of the babies for building a healthier nation.
He especially asked the parents to provide Vitamin A Plus Capsule to every under-five baby for increasing their disease resistant capacities to further reduce the infant mortality rate and prevent night blindness.
According to RpCC sources, 16 category-1 supervisors, three category-2 supervisors and 891 volunteers have been providing Vitamin A Plus Capsules at 297 outreach centres and 11 satellite centres in all 33 wards of the city from 8am to 4pm today.
Under the campaign, 18,000 babies aged between 6 and 11 months and 1.06 lakh babies between 12 and 59 months are being administered with one dose of one lakh unit Vitamin A Plus Blue Capsule and one dose of two lakh unit of Vitamin A Red Capsule each respectively.

Besides, 5,486 volunteers are carrying out the works in nine upazilas of the district.

Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Land, Alhaj Rezaul Karim Hira inaugurated the campaign at Muslimabad government primary school center in the town by administering vitamin A capsule to a baby this morning.
Civil Surgeon Dr Moshaerul Islam, Jamalpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Oficer Abdus Salam and Mayor of Jamalpur Municipality Mirza Shakhawatul Alam Moni were present on the occasion.
In the campaign, each of 34,227 children aged between 6 to 11 months will be administered one lakh IU (International Unit) blue coloured vitamin A capsule while each of the 282,204 children aged from 12 to 59 months will be fed two lakh IU red coloured vitamin A capsule in the district.
