Nat`l unity must for successful movement: Fakhrul

UNB, Dhaka :
Observing that no mass upsurge had been successful in the country’s political history without a national unity, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday urged his party colleagues to work for forging a unity to make their anti-government movement a success.
“No mass upheaval in the country’s political history became successful unless a national unity. Unfortunately, no such national unity has so far been formed here,” he said. The BNP leader came up with the remark while
speaking at a discussion meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity arranged by Jehad Smrity Parishad, marking the 26th anniversary of the martyrdom of Nazir Uddin Ahmed Jehad.
Jehad, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activist of Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj, was shot dead in the capital on October 10, 1990 during the anti-Ershad movement.
Mentioning that the country’s current political situation is unimaginable, Fakhrul said, “The context of the 1990 and 2016 is quite difference. The death of Jehad in 1990 had sparked off a huge outrage across the country, paving the path for a national unity.”
He further said, “Over a thousand people scarified their lives during the current anti-government movement, but there is no emotional response from the people for them this time. So, we must awake people.”
The BNP leader regretted that though a national unity was forged before the 2014 election, the movement did not yield any positive outcome due to the emerging circumstances. “The victory could have been achieved at that time had we been able to bring the geopolitics in favour of the movement.”
Fakhrul claimed that 90 per cent people of the country do not like Sheikh Hasina, and said she has been in power as some countries, including neighbouring one, who talk about democracy are extending their support to her.
He also criticised the government for passing the Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulation Bill, 2016′, and said the government has now become hostile to NGOs as they used to raise their voce for the rule of law and democracy.
“This government won’t spare anyone as a fascist regime does it. If we can’t put up a resistance by forging a national unity against this regime, no one can evade its wrath,” Fakhrul warned.
He also called upon BNP leaders and activists to get united putting aside the misunderstandings among them to defeat the current ‘monstrous regime.”
