UNB, Dhaka :
Speakers at a discussion in the city on Friday called for a national unity to establish effective democracy in the country.
Gano Forum organised the discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the city marking its 21st founding anniversary.
Former President Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, President of Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim, former caretaker government adviser Dr Akbar Ali Khan, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna and President of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) ASM Abdur Rob spoke at the discussion with Gano Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain in the chair.
Observing that no shred of democracy now exists in the country as the current government came to power without public mandate through the ‘voter-less’ January-5 election, the speakers said there is a need for forging a national unity for
establishing effective democracy in the country.
In his speech, Dr Kamal Hossain said, “If we can forge a national unity, a bright future is awaiting us… so today I would like to call for a national unity among the like-minded civil society members and political parties.”
Criticising the January-5 parliamentary elections, he said nothing other than democracy can anyway be accepted in the country.
Badruddoza Chowdhury, also President of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, said if the current regime continues for more four-five years, the democracy would be buried completely. “If we can’t restore the democracy, we’ll be held responsible in the history.”
Akbar Ali Khan said it has been proved that the caretaker government system is still needed as fair election is not possible under a party government.
