Bangladesh will observe the National Occupational Health and Safety Day for the fifth time on today without any programmes due to coronavirus outbreak.
The day will be observed with the theme “A pledge of Mujib Barsho, healthy working environment for all,” said a handout from the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Special supplements will be published by some
national dailies, it said. Member countries of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), have been celebrating the day since 2016 aiming to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and be developed countries by 2041.
This year, the day will focus on addressing the outbreak of infectious diseases at work, focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ILO is also recognizing the great challenge that governments, employers, workers and whole societies are facing worldwide to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Globally, an estimated 2.78 million workers die each year as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases, it said.
Additionally, some 374 million non-fatal work-related injuries occur each year all over the world. Most of these deaths and accidents are preventable, according to ILO.
