National Fisheries Week ends

The National Fisheries Week-2018 ended in the district yesterday with a call to boost production of fishes including indigenous ones to meet the demand of nutrition and create employment.
A concluding ceremony was also held at the office of district fisheries officer (DFO) of the town here on Saturday afternoon at the directive of the higher authorities concerned though the week was celebrated here from July 18 to July 24.
Acting deputy commissioner (DC) Muhammad Mizanur Rahman addressed the function as the chief guest and district controller of food M. Amzad Hossain was present at the event as the special guests.
With DFO Abdud Dayan in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by senior assistant director Barun Chandra Biswas, senior Sadar upazila fisheries officer Sanjoy Banerjee, fish cultivator Saiful Islam Dulu and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.
The speakers in their speeches underscored the need for enhancing the fish production in all the seven upazilas here at larger scale through motivating the new farmers and establishing fish sanctuaries in the water bodies of the district.
They also emphasized for protecting the mother fishes in the haors, bills and other water bodies and Jatka in the river of Jamuna at the initiative of the fisheries department involving the locals.
They also demanded of the government to provide subsidy or the loans with nominal interest to help the fish farmers produce more fishes without economical trouble and to brighten the fisheries sector as well.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Fisheries officials and experts at a function said Bangladesh achieved tremendous success in fish production in last ten years, meeting nutrition demand of people with leading the country on the way to achieve self-reliance in this regard. The observation came at the concluding and prize giving ceremony of the National Fisheries Week-2018 jointly organised by Upazila Fisheries Department and upazila administration at Bir Muktijoddha Tipu Munshi auditorium in Kawnia upazila town on Saturday evening.
The weeklong programmes included colourful rallies, releasing fish fries, awareness building and motivational activities with a renewed call and fresh strategies for further development of the prospective fisheries sector.
With Kawnia Upazila Fisheries Officer Manjurul Islam in the chair, Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Nazia Sultana attended the function as the chief guest.
Assistant Upazila Fisheries Officers Mahbub Ul Alam and Jiban Krishna Sarker, successful fish farmers Raju Ahmed and Rezaul Karim, among others, addressed the function.
More than 900 people, including fish farmers and fishermen, officials and employees, political leaders, hatchery owners, pisciculture extension workers, fish-feed traders, teachers and students were present.
Manjurul Islam narrated the success achieved in increasing fish production in Kawnia upazila as well as in the district where the farmers produced 40,720 tonnes of fish during last 2017-2018 fiscal against annual demand of63,095 tonnes.
“The fish production increased by 5,643 tonnes during the last fiscal while it was 35,077 tonnes in 2016-2017 fiscal in the district and the trend will continue in the coming years all over the district,” he said.
The chief guest mentioned tremendous economic prospect of the fisheries sector in the upazila and called for further boosting fish production using the latest technologies and protecting the natural breeding grounds with stopping hunt of smaller fishes.
Later, she distributed crests and prizes among the five best hatchery owners and fish farmers of the upazila for their tremendous success in enhancing cultivation and production of fish.
