National Fisheries Week begins today

The National Fisheries Week begins today across the country with a view to produce additional 2-3 lakh tonnes of fish in a year through proper use of all unutilized water bodies.
“The main objective of the week is to put importance to optimum use of the underutilized water bodies so the country can produce additional 2-3 lakh tonnes of fishes in a year”, said Director General of the Department of Fisheries (DoF) Syed Arif Azad.
The main slogan of the week is ‘where the water bodies, aquaculture is there’ (Jal Ache Jekhane Match chash sekhane).
The weeklong fisheries week is held, every year to create greater awareness among the people about the country’s fish resources.
Apart from being the major source of protein, fisheries are also a major economic activity, accounting for a significant part of the country’s exports. This year, too, there will be programmes at the national and district levels.
A rally to commemorate the day will begin at 8 in the morning from Matshya Bhaban and will end at the Muktanggon parading through important thoroughfares. It w1l be followed by a press conference at the Department of Fisheries (DoF) at 10.30am.
On the second day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will officially inaugurate the week and distribute national fisheries award-2016 among the successful fish farmers at the rishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) at Khamarbari, Farmgate, in the capital at 10.30am.
The Prime Minister also will release fish fries at Gano Bhaban Lake at around 12pm.
