The National Fisheries Week was inaugurated in Sherpur on Wednesday at about 11 am with the slogan “Food, clothing, shelter and fishing is the solution”.
District Administration and the Fisheries Department brought out a colorful rally. The rally started from the New Market Crossing and went round the main roads.
It was ended at Sherpur Fine Arts Academy premises. Elite, different high officials, political leaders, fishermen, NGOs and local people participated in the rally.
Later a discussion meeting was held at district fine arts hall room. District Fisheries officer Golam Mostofa Akanda presided over the function while Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Zakir Hossain was the Chief Guest. Among others ADC (Revenue) Md Hanif Uddin, Sherpur Press Club president Rafiqul Islam Adhar, Additional Police Super Muhibul Islam Khan, Assistant Director of Agriculture Extension Department Suvas Chandra Debnath, Press Club Secretary Sabiha Jahan Sapla spoke on that occasion.
Besides, Jhenaigati, Srebordi, Nalirabari and Nakla upazila administration and the fisheries department of the upazilas organised the same function separately.
National Fisheries Week started at 2 July 2014 and it will go on till 8 July 2014.
BSS from Rangpur adds: The National Fisheries Week is being observed in Rangpur division since on Wednesday with a call to increase fish production through protecting natural breeding grounds and stopping catch of smaller fishes. Speakers at separate discussions called for preserving extinct and indigenous fish species to increase production in achieving self-reliance by rural people cutting poverty besides meeting nutritional demand.
The Fisheries Department with the assistances of the district administrations, NGOs and development organisations have been observing the week through arranging various programmes at the district and upazila headquarters and rural areas.
The weeklong programmes include colourful rallies, releasing fish fries, discussions, seminars, awareness building and motivational activities with a renewed call and fresh strategies for further developing the country’s prospective fisheries sector.
In Rangpur, a huge rally participated by officials and employees of administrations, Fisheries Department, NGOs, teachers, students, owners of the pisciculture farms and hatcheries paraded the city streets carrying banners, placards and festoons yesterday.

Later, Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Dilwar Bakht attended and addressed the main discussion meeting held at Town Hall auditorium in the city as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Shahidul Islam in the chair.
Divisional Deputy Director of the Fisheries Department Rafiq Biswas, District Fisheries Officer Rawshan Ara Begum, GO-NGO officials, hatchery owners, pisciculture extension workers, fish feed traders and fish farmers also addressed.
The speakers stressed for proper utilisation of all water bodies including beels, haors, ponds and flood plains through bring those under fish cultivation ensuring best use of the existing natural resources to make the nation self-sufficient in fish production.
