National Energy Security Day-2015 will be observed today commemorating the historic decision taken by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.
Bagabandhu bought five gas fields from the then Shell Oil Company for the state on August 9 in 1975.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the eve of the day.
In his message, President Abdul Hamid called upon all to contribute to national development by making proper use of energy and stopping its wastage.
Power and energy are the main driving force of economy, he said, adding that the government has given priority to power and energy.
The President recalled the historic role of Bangabandhu in ensuring energy security of the country, saying that Bagabandhu had bought five gas fields from the then Shell Oil Company for the state on August 9 in 1975. He stressed the need for encouraging use of renewable energy to reduce pressure on natural gas and suggested expediting exploration activities to increase country’s gas reserve.
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon all to be more caring to ensure the best use of natural gas and prevent wastage of this resource.
She hoped that the observance of National Energy Security Day-2015 would play an important role in creating public awareness in this regard.
The Prime Minister said following the instance of Bangabandhu, the Awami League government always gives priority to the energy security of the country.
She said the production and supply of the natural gas in the country has been increased by drilling and exploring new gas fields.
The Prime Minister said in January 2009 the daily production of natural gas was only 1,744 million cubic feet, which has now increased to 2,700 million cubic feet.
She said the present government has discovered gas fields at Sadullapur, Srikail and Roopganj. Besides, the Bibiyana gas field has expanded, she added.
To ensure energy security, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is being imported along with the use of country’s natural gas and coal, she added.
Referring to the prospect of exploring energy from the bed of the Bay of Bengal, the Prime Minister said, the government has undertaken offshore oil-gas exploration programmes after settlement of sea boundary disputes and India and Myanmar.
