BSS, Dhaka :
The “National Disaster Preparedness Day-2015” will be observed in the country today with a view to raising mass awareness about natural calamities.
Disaster Management Ministry and different socio-political organizations have chalked out elaborate programmes under the theme of “Let us know science based information and bring down losses of disaster” to mark the day.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday issued separate messages on the eve of the day.
In the message, President Abdul Hamid expressed his belief that all
ministries, departments, public and private organizations and civil society related to disaster management will remain active in building disaster resilient society through implementing disaster risk reduction and preparation and emergency response programmes under the theme of the day.
He termed the day’s theme as time befitting one and said the programmes taken marking the day will help increase awareness about men-made and natural disasters among the people.
“I believe the disaster casualties and damages can be kept to a tolerable level if all countrymen are aware and prepared to face calamities,” the President said.
In a separate message, Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina recalled that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu had installed earthen forts as “Mujib Kella” in coastlines, which are still now being used as cyclone shelters.
She said, her government is always ready to incorporate disaster risk reduction issues in all development programmes to build a safe and disaster resilience nation.
Referring to the Disaster Management Policy-2011, Disaster Management Act-2012 and National Disaster Management Planning 2010-15, the Prime Minister said side by side with the government, all including non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society should come forward to build an effective disaster management infrastructure to reduce the post-disaster losses. Both the President and the Prime Minister wished all success of day.
