Nasir Hossain, who is still in consideration to play for the national team, sprung a surprise by scoring lowest in the beep test, through which the fitness level of the players is being determined.
The beep test is being held to determine the players eligibility to play the upcoming Bangabandhu T20 Cup, which is the second tournament the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is organizing amid Covid-19 pandemic.
Five teams will play for the championship title in the tournament for which the Players Draft will be held on November 12.
Like everyone else, Nasir also gave a fitness test on Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. While the selectors kept 11 score as a pass mark in the beep test, Nasir made the lowest score in the last two days. Nasir’s score in the beep test is only 8.5.
Where cricketers in their thirties like Abdur Razzak, Shahriar Nafees, Mohammad Ashraful, Enamul Haque Junior have made a splash in the beep Test, Nasir Hossain has been disappointing.
According to many, Nasir’s score at this age and in the current context is ‘shameful’. On the first day on Monday, Mohammad Ashraful scored 11.4 and Shahriar Nafees came out with 11.1. Enamul Haque Jr.’s score is astonishing, 12.2. Razzak’s score has crossed 11. While one or two of the youngsters are disappointing, those who are regular faces in domestic cricket have all passed.
However chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu confirmed Nasir will not be able to play the Bangabandhu T20 Cup as he failed miserably in the beep test.
“Those who do not pass the fitness test will not be in the players draft. Nasir’s score is disappointing and shameful. One will score such low when he remains careless towards himself,” Minhajul Abedin Nannu said on Tuesday.
“Many senior cricketers are doing much better now where Nasir came up with such a low score. Razzak, Shahriar Nafees, Ashraful, Enamul Junior who are senior than Nasir passed with good points in the fitness test. I don’t think Nasir cares for cricket much and utilizes the time well during when cricket wasn’t on the field.”
