UNB, Chittagong :
AJM Nasir Uddin, the ruling party-backed mayoral candidate in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls, appeared before a local court on Monday in a case filed for attempting to murder an Awami League leader 22 years ago.
AJM Nasir Uddin, general secretary of city Awami League, appeared before the court of Session’s Judge Nurul Huda.
Abul Hashem, public prosecutor of Chittagong district court, said five accused, including AJM Nasir and Nizam Hazari MP of Feni, were present during the hearing on Monday.
Earlier, AJM Nasir secured his bail from the court on April 1.
According to the case statement, a group of miscreants attacked Sufian Siddique, the then Awami League leader, during a public meeting of Sheikh Hasina at Laldighi Maidan in the city on January 24, 1993.
Sufian Siddique filed a case accusing 18 people on charge of attempting to murder him on that day.
On March 7, 1993 police submitted charge sheet against the accused. Following a petition filed by an accused, the High Court later stayed the case proceedings.
However, a High Court division bench in March, 2014 ordered revival of the case.
But the court order reached the Chittagong court in March this year. Later, the court fixed April 6 for starting the trial in the case.
