Awami League Presidium member Mohammed Nasim on Sunday demanded ensuring quick trial in the cases of repression against women.
“When we hear the incidents of women repression during the age of women empowerment, we get hurt. We urge home and law ministers to ensure quick trial of repressors,” he said.
Nasim, also 14-party spokesperson, was addressing a memorial meeting on former AL general secretary Abdul Jalil, arranged by Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, marking his 7th death anniversary at Jatiya Press Club’s Maulana Akram Khan Hall here.
He also sought death sentence as capital punishment for brutal torture on women.
Extending greetings to womenfolk on the International Women’s Day today, Nasim said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has been utilizing merits and skills of women to empower them and help them contribute to the national economy.
The AL presidium member said Bangladesh has set an example in women empowerment in the world.
“We by heart want women empowerment but if wrongdoers like Papiya emerge, the empowerment of women will become meaningless,” he said.
Cultural personality Syed Hasan Imam chaired the meeting while AL Organizing Secretary Shakhawat Hossain Shafique, State Minister for Information Dr Murad Hassan, AL leader Advocate Balaram Podder, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote Vice-President singer Rafiqul Alam and its general secretary Arun Sarkar Rana addressed it, among others.
