Narail Zila Parishad chairman lands in jail

A court here on Monday sent convicted Narail Zila Parishad Chairman Sohrab Hossain Biswas to jail in connection with a corruption case.
Judge Nitai Chandra Saha of the Jessore Special Judge Court passed the order when Sohrab, then mayor of Narail municipality, surrendered before his court in the morning.
Earlier on September 26, a local court sentenced

eight public representatives, including the Narail Zila Parisahd Chairman, to seven years imprisonment.
The court also fined them Tk 1.96 lakh each, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.
The other convicts are Narail municipality mayor Jahangir Biswas (then commissioner), then commissioners of the municipality Sharful Alam Litu, Mushfiqur Rahman, Ahmed Ali Khan, Rafiqul Islam, Telayet Hossain and acting secretary (then chief assistant) Matiar Rahman.
According to the prosecution, Sohrab in connivance with six municipality commissioners embezzled Tk 1.96 lakh after showing a haat as khas land for three years when he was the mayor of the municipality during 2004-2005 fiscal year.
