The announcement of election results in Nandigram has been postponed due to confusion over ballot counting.
“The ballots are likely to be recounted. The returning officer will take the final decision in this regard. But for now, Shuvendu Adhikari is the winner, said Ariz Aftab, the state’s chief electoral officer. Earlier, Indian media Anandabazar reported that BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari had won the seat, not Mamata Banerjee after reports citing Mamata’s victory. Some Indian newspapers reported that she defeated her former aide Suvendu by a margin of 1,200 seats.
After fixing a server glitch, Election Commission announced that Suvendu won by 1,622 votes. When Anandabazar contacted Suvendu, he also confirmed it.
Meanwhile, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, “Don’t worry about Nandigram, I struggled for Nandigram because I fought a movement. It’s ok. Let the Nandigram people give whatever verdict they want, I accept that. I don’t mind. We won more than 221 seats & BJP has lost the election”
“BJP has lost the elections. They played dirty politics. We faced the horror of Election Commission,” she added.
Mamata further said, “We are grateful to the people for this landslide victory. I have to start working for Covid-19 immediately. The swearing-in will be a low-key event because of the prevailing Covid-19 situation.”
