Namibia confirmed their quarterfinal berth upsetting defending champion South Africa by two-wicket in their Group-A 2nd match of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground on Sunday.
To set their quarterfinal berth Namibia crushed Scotland 9-wicket with 144 balls remaining in their first group match on Friday (January 29).
Replying to South Africa’s 136 runs, Namibia completed their winning journey scoring 137 runs for 8 in 39.4 overs with Lohan Louwrens top scoring unbeaten 58 off 97 balls, including nine boundaries.
Charl Brits (27 off 46b; 4×4), skipper Zane Green (14 off 50b; 2×4) and Jurgen Linde (12 off 20b; 1×4) were the other double digit scorers for Namibia.
Ziyaad Abrahams and Sean Whitehead took two wickets each for 18 and 27 runs in 8.4 and 7 overs. Dayyaan Galiem, Willem Ludick and Lutho Sipamla took one wicket each.
Opening bat after winning the toss, South Africa scored 136 for 9 in 50 overs with WC Ludick topscoring 42 off 98 balls with four fours and one six.
Skipper Tony de Zorzi (18 off 21b; 4×4), Lutho Sipamla (not out 17 off 63b; 1×4), Kyle Verreynne (16 off 36b; 3×4) and Dean Foxcroft (12 off 39b; 1×4) were the other double figure scorers for South Africa.
Michael van Lingen captured four wickets for 24 runs in 10 overs and was adjudged man of the match. Fritz Coetzee bagged three wickets for 16 runs also in 10 overs.
South Africa conceded a 43-run defeat in the tournament opening match against Bangladesh at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on January 27.
