The Nakugaon Land Port in Sherpur will be used by Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan for transit, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan has said.
Launching it as a full-fledged port on Thursday, the minister also said the government would form an advisory body and take steps for its development.
“India, Nepal and Bhutan have their transit facilities. We’ll use this port for the transit as well,” he said.
The four SAARC countries signed a regional motor vehicle agreement on June 16, easing the movement of both people and goods among them.
According to Khan, there were nine ports in Bangladesh in 2009.
He said the current government opened 20 ports in order to expand international trade. “It has a plan to set up 10 more,” he said.
Nakugaon Land Customs Port started operation with an immigration check post for export and import of goods between India and Bangladesh in 1997.
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury and Khan had laid the foundation stone of the full-fledged port on Dec 31, 2011.
The port infrastructure was constructed on around 13.5-acre of land at a cost of Tk 161.9 million in the 2013-14 fiscal year.
