Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Thursday called upon the universities and other institutions of higher education to develop adequate number of technologically efficient people for country’s development.
He made the call speaking as the representative of President Abdul Hamid at the second convocation of Green University of Bangladesh (GUB) at Bashundhara International Convention in the city.
“So long we will not be able to create personnel efficient in knowledge and technology, the country would not develop,” the minister said.
Reiterating the government’s pledge to upgrade Bangladesh to a middle income country by 2021 and a developed country by 2041, he said, “Poverty eradication is still a challenge for us. There is no alternative to education for poverty eradication.”
The education minister said the government has given approval for setting up a good number of private universities to meet the demand of higher education and it has taken steps to enhance their quality.
He said all the students studying in both public and private universities are children of the country and future of the nation.
The government wants to ensure quality education for all of them without making any difference, he added.
The minister said some private universities are yet to fulfill their minimum terms and conditions, and those universities would not be allowed to run, he warned.
University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. Abdul Mannan, GUB Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. Golam Samdani Fakir and GUB Trustee Board Chairman M Abdullah Al Mamun also addressed the function.
In the convocation, 1,536 students received certificates on completion of courses from different departments. Eleven students got gold medals for outstanding results.
