Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid called upon the private university authorities to adopt liberal attitudes in fixing tuition fees and other costs for students.
He made the call on Thursday while presiding over the third convocation of Dhaka International University (DIU) as the representative of President Abdul Hamid at Mirpur Police Staff College Convention Hall in the city, said an official release.
The minister urged the private universities to keep the expenses of students within a limit, shunning the mentality of making ‘business and benefits.’
Prof. Dr. Syed Anwar Hossain was the convocation speaker while DIU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AK Mohsin and DIU Board of Trustee Chairman Dr. Muhammad Shaheedul Quadir Patwari also spoke on the occasion.
Nahid said the government has already taken actions against those private universities which started activities with a view to make profits. Actions would be taken as per Private University Act 2010, if any university wants to make business and resort to cheating, he added.
The education minister said currently the number of students is more in private universities than in public universities and the government does not make any difference between the students studying in private and public universities.
