Nagad charges transaction fees violating govt’s instruction

Nagad, the mobile financial service operator (MFS) of Bangladesh Post Office, is charging fees in case of cash transactions violating the government’s announcement not to charge for a certain amount of money in the wake of devastating coronavirus attack.
Many people of low-income group alleged that agents of Nagad in different parts of the country charges are charging Tk 14.50 for transacting Tk 1000.00 while other MFS operators like bkash, Rocket, Sure Cash are not charging fees in line with the central bank’s instruction.
A survey conducted by Bangladesh Journalists’ Foundation For Consumers and Investors (BJFCI) shows most MFS agents in different parts of the capital city, except Naga agents are providing customers charge free transactions in line with the regulatory instruction in the wake of coronavirus devastation.
Bangladesh Bank has asked all MFS operators not to charge fees in case of transaction of at least Tk 1000 to support the low-income group of people meet their urgent needs. The central bank also has increased the limit of person to person transactions and made purchase of essential goods and medicines free of charge.
Director General of Bangladesh Post Office has announced that Nagad digital financial service will allow customers to transact money without any fees. “Nagad will continue its service during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak and serve people without fees for transaction of Tk 1000 each”, he told a daily.
“But the reality is different. Most Nagad agents are charging fees randomly”, said Khorshed Alom, residing in Khilgaon area.
