A day- long Nabanna Utsab-1423, new harvesting season at late autumn, was observed colourfully by Dalit Matua Community on Wednesday at Amritangan of Natun Bazar area in Barishal with the slogan ‘Natun Dhanney Hobey Nabanna Aaj . Matua Samprodaya, the Hindu Dalits sect of farmers, agricultural workers and followers of Hari Guruchand Thakur, organised this Nabanna or ‘the festival of new harvest’ during the Bangla month of Agrahayan (Nov-Dec). ‘Mon diey Krishi Karo, Pujo Mati Mae, Mone Rekho, Bechey Achho, Matir Kripae’ (do agriculture earnestly, worship the mother-earth, remind that, you are living on courtesy of the soil), was the theme of the festival. Divisional leader of the community and President of the Mandir Committee Dr.Gokul Chandra Biswas presided over the inaugural session of the festival.
Among others Rakhal Chandra Dey, district president of Puja Udjapon Parishad, Bijoy Krishna Dey, chief patroniser of the community, Gazi Naimul Hosain Litu, local ward councilor, Monika Thakur and other leaders of the community addressed the inaugural session of the festival.
Participants and speakers of the festival called for end of inner and inter-communal discriminations and to observe the Nabanna Utsav officially as a national cultural festival. The inaugural ceremony was followed by the colourful procession on city roads, and sessions of religious rituals.
The festival programme also included farmer’s reception, discussion, Nabanna Mela, food festival and feeding the guest with newly harvested crops, special ‘Nabanna, cultural function.
