The North Korean diplomat, who was caught red handed with 27kg gold at Dhaka airport on March 6, left Bangladesh on Sunday night following the govern ment’s 72-hour ultimatum to leave the country. Bangladesh Government issued the ultimatum to the North Korean diplomat Son Yang to leave the country for his involvement in gold trafficking, according to Foreign Ministry sources. The Foreign Ministry summoned the North Korean ambassador and gave him the instruction to withdraw Son Yang from Bangladesh.
On March 6, Customs official seized 170 gold bars, weighing 27 kilogrammes, worth Taka about 13 crore from Son Yang at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in capital Dhaka. He had been working as first secretary (Commercial and Economics) to the North Korean embassy in Dhaka.
The four other officials of North Korean embassy who had gone to the airport to receive Son Yang were also detained and released later.
The Foreign Ministry sources said four other officials of North Korean embassy have been kept under strict surveillance. The government has been investigating against the four other North Korean officials suspected to be involved in organised gold trafficking.
According to Vienna Convention, the law enforcers can not file any criminal case against any foreign diplomat. Therefore, Son Yang was not arrested at the airport. He was handed over to the foreign ministry.
