Mystery shrouds death of youth in Rangpur

Mystery shrouded the death of a youth, Sohel Rana alias Rasel, 30 in police custody. Relatives of the deceased claimed that police killed him by beating and torture. Police said, he was a drug peddler and died of drug poisoning.
DB Police Inspector, Shariful Islam said, a team of DB police led by Sub-inspector, Morshedul Islam arrested Rasel on Saturday night with 3 gram heroine from Sathmatha- Mahigonj area outskirts of the city. He was a drug peddler and an addicted. Soon after his arrest he fell sick and we transferred him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital [RMCH]. He died of heroine poisoning while undergoing treatment at RMCH on Sunday morning around 11.30 am . We had physicians certificate in this regard. There were several cases of drug peddling against him with different police stations of the district.
Deceased’s wife, Runi Begum alleged that DB Police arrested Rasel on Saturday night around 11.00 pm from his house at Haldibarai area under Kawnia upazilla of the district. Police demanded 1.5 lakh taka from him. As he denied, police beat him to death.
Deceased’s sister, Sohana Moni also made similar complains against police. When asked, Additional Superintendent of Police, Zakir Hossain said, Rasel died of heroine poisoning.

There were several cases of drug peddling against him with Lalmonirhat, Kawnia and Rangpur Kotowali police stations. His all family members were involved in drug peddling.
