Staff Reporter :The government has given its final clearance for the proposal to declare Mymensingh as the eighth administrative division of the country. The approval came from the meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR) on Monday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat.Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said that the new division would consist of four districts of Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Sherpur and Netrokona, keeping Tangail and Kishoreganj districts outside of it.The Cabinet on January 26 took the decision of announcing Mymensingh as country’s eighth division. Later, the Cabinet also planned to establish two other administrative divisions– Faridpur division and a division comprised of Comilla and Noakhali districts.Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said, the Cabinet earlier in this connection directed the Cabinet Division to examine the feasibility and utility of the establishment of the two other administrative divisions. On June 26, the Cabinet cleared the proposal for Mymensingh division, which kept the districts of Tangail and Kishoreganj in the new division and forwarded it to NICAR for the final nod. On Monday, the final approval came, but both these two districts were dropped from the new division in face of opposition of people of the two districts.The NICAR in its yesterday’s meeting also decided to create Bhandaria in Pirojpur district as a new municipality, expansion of Homna municipality in Comilla district and set up a new police station dividing Muradnagar Police Station, also in Comilla district. The new police station, encompassing 189 square kilometers with 240,775 population in 10 unions, will be known as Bangora Bazar Police Station.The people of Tangail and Kishoreganj districts, which were sub-divisions under the greater Mymensingh district, opposed the government’s earlier decision about Mymensingh division. The people wanted to remain part of Dhaka Division. At last their demand has been fulfilled.
